Landscape, land use, open space maps

Zesmill provides comprehensive mapping services to urban planning, development, small town and rural planning projects. We create maps, GIS layers, 3D models and web maps on the basis of the planning and geographical data provided by our clients and collected by our surveying and photogrammetric teams.

Our work means regular meetings with a dedicated urban planners or project team to ensure your needs are being met, and provided geospatial data, images and maps are met your project requirements.

Landscape maps

Landscape maps depict a range of natural, anthropogenically changed, technogenic and cultural geosystems. Every region is characterized by certain landscape types, which number can vary from 3-4 to 30-40. Zesmill’s geographers are experts in landscape classification and mapping. The landscape approach overcomes some of disadvantages of traditional land use maps, which generally show artificial objects like land parcels, administrative boundaries, windbreaks, hedges, and roads. Detail landscape maps (scales of 1:5,000-1:10,000) depict facies; medium-scale maps (1:10,000-1:100,000) depict localities and landscapes; and small-scale maps provide landscape zoning and geographical regionalization.

Landscape maps we create can be employed for the land management; rural and urban planning; forest, coastal and wetland inventory and restoration; land reclamation; conservation planning.

Land use maps

Ideally, land use map matches each parcel with a specific use marker. It strongly depends on whether the land inventory has been conducted for all areas currently zoned for development. It is also dependent on existing land title (cadastral) registration system. According to local legislation and planning regulations, land uses can be divided in certain categories (from 5 to 30-40).

We provide mapping services for both urban and rural areas planning projects.

Zoning maps

Zoning maps provide intricate zoning information for the municipalities, planners, civil engineers and public. Land use and zoning designations can be combined or separated depending on national legislation and local planning regulations.

Maps of parks and open spaces

Map of open spaces provide a comprehensive view of parks, other recreational and non-recreational open spaces. An open space planning should determine the role of each type of open space and identify areas that deserve particular attention. We also calculate and map the proximity, or “walkability index” to parks, beaches, and public spaces.

Satellite thermal imaging allows us to measure the surface temperature of pavements, roofs, grass and forest canopy and other urban areas to assess urban heat island (UHI) effects. Urban forests and moist parks with a lush vegetation form park cool island effect which is especially pronounced at summertime. Shading effects of trees along city streets can also be significant. Zesmill utilizes Landsat-8 and WorldView-3 imagery and ground meteorological instruments (thermometers, infrared sensors, humidity meters, net-radiometers) to create detail urban micro-climate maps and research UHI aspects.

Maps of historic buildings, districts conservation and preservation

These maps show historic districts according to the national and city registers as well as historic buildings, landmarks, monuments and memorials. Our photogrammetrists and surveyors can depict every building or landmark in its precise position, measure its geometrics, and calculate buffer zones around heritage properties. Such maps determine how best to integrate new development into historic architectural complexes.

Road network maps

Depending on city size and nature of the planning project, Zesmill will provide you with road and street network maps; parking lot maps; HOV (high occupancy vehicle) line maps; primary goods movement maps etc. Also our company offers comprehensive road and parking lot inventory services and traffic volume measurements.
