Pre-feasibility and feasibility studies

Feasibility studies are preliminary studies performed in the very early stage of development, construction or environmental management projects. Feasibility study precedes the general and detailed design stage, and that, in turn, the bidding process, construction and improvement works.

There are three common initial project stages; the first one may be skipped for the local projects.

Scoping study which is frequently used to calculate the viability of the project and assess several alternative locations.

Pre-feasibility study which is carried out to collect sufficient data in order to estimate site(s) attributes, technical performance, capital intensity and project profitability as well as environmental and social issues. It is still can consider several locations.

Feasibility study is the detail study aimed to collect all relevant data to investigate geological, geographical, and socio-economic determinants to press the green or the red light for the project. It also involves surveying and creation of topographic and thematic maps for planners and civil engineers.

Zesmill specialized in feasibility studies for environmental management projects, land development, airport and other transport terminals expansion. We also work with local governments, energy and mining companies, tourist and retail businesses as well as with NGOs.

Zesmill performs the following services and surveys for pre-feasibility studies:

  • aerial and satellite imaging; image interpretation
  • desk-based, remote sensing and field geological and geomorphological studies
  • recompilation and analysis of climate data (solar radiation, temperatures, winds, precipitation, frost-free season length, wet season lengths, etc.)
  • landscape and land use maps
  • hydrological studies and hydrometrical measurements
  • demography and social profile studies
  • economic and business geography studies
  • thematic mapping of all types
  • identifying lacking information to be collected during feasibility studies and engineering surveys
  • identifying potential limitations of the project
  • comparison between alternatives locations for the proposed development using GIS modeling and analysis instruments

We also provide expert surveying, mapping and analytical services for feasibility studies in the following areas:

  • aerial and satellite imaging; orthophoto production from satellite, aerial, and UAV (drone) imagery
  • topographic surveying and mapping at the basic scales of 5,000...1:50,000
  • desk-based and field geological studies, assessment of active faults, fractured zones, and tectonic movements
  • geomorphological studies – landform identification, stable landform identification, slope process fingerprinting
  • delineation of tectonic faults, landslide and earth subsidence/sinkhole prone areas
  • hydrographic surveys, streamflow measurements and records, determine risks associated with bank and bridge scour, channel adjustment
  • hydropower resource assessment
  • assessment of water sources and water consumption
  • landscape and land use maps
  • natural and anthropogenically modified landscapes assessment
  • vegetation mapping, riparian zones and wetland mapping
  • flora and fauna surveys, to advice on presence of significant flora and fauna issues on the development site, and assess potential harm to any protected fauna
  • soil erosion mapping and modelling
  • demography and social profile studies
  • economic and business geography studies
  • road and railroad infrastructure assessment and mapping
  • thematic mapping of all types

Since many countries and states require special geological and geodetic licenses to be obtained, we work closely with licensed and authorized local companies and government bodies. Often we work as a subcontractor responsible for certain parts of the feasibility study. When required, we can act as external (independent) consultants.
